Deputies rescue women lost in Tunica Hills

tunica hills mapOn Sunday, July 6 Bethany Dennis, 21, Kaylee Hatcher, 21, and Margaret Kissner, 20, all of Baton Rouge, strayed from the marked trails of the Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area to explore a nearby creek. They began walking down the creek bed, but as it began to get dark they realized they were lost. They called 9-1-1 and were connected to West Feliciana Dispatch at approximately 9:30p.m.

When a call comes into dispatch, they are able to determine the originating location within seconds using an emergency communications system feature called ALI, which stands for Automatic Location Identifier.

West Feliciana Sheriff’s Deputies searched Tunica Hills for the women using the GPS coordinates from dispatch and a mapping app on a cell phone, and were able to locate them at 11:55p.m.

While waiting to be rescued, and despite being advised not to do so, the women burned their clothes to create some light and therefore had to hike out of Tunica Hills barefooted in their swim suits.

“Anyone hiking in this area should come prepared with water, a flashlight, and some kind of GPS system. You just never know what is going to happen,” said Col. Randy Metz. “This is yet another example of what can happen to inexperienced hikers who venture into the area without proper gear and without a plan.”

Hikers are advised to stay on the marked trails. Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area is composed of two separate tracts lying northwest of St. Francisville in West Feliciana Parish, and encompasses 5,906 acres. Terrain in the area is characterized by rugged hills, bluffs, creeks, and ravines. This area offers a diverse and unique habitat that supports some species of plants and animals not found elsewhere in Louisiana, which makes it a popular destination for hikers, campers, and nature lovers alike.
