The Uniform Patrol Division operates out of the WFPSO Substation located at 8562 U.S. Highway 61, and also supports a fully functional 24 hour heliport for the use of the Sheriff’s office helicopter and Air Med services Captain Michael Taylor supervises the 25 employees of the Uniform Patrol Division. He is assisted by two lieutenants, and Ms Sara Ferguson, uniform patrol administrative assistant. Four 12-hour shifts provide 24 hour-a-day coverage 7 days a week. These shifts rotate days and nights. Each deputy is issued all of the equipment needed for them to safely perform the law enforcement tasks assigned to them. These include a marked vehicle, weapons lethal and non lethal, Class A uniforms, bulletproof vests, a duty belt, etc. All full-time deputies receive training at Louisiana Peace Officer Standards of Training approved law enforcement academies and upon successf completion, are so certified by the State of Louisiana. All deputies are encouraged to continue their education after basic training.WFPSO deputies handle a variety of calls ranging from loose livestock to homicides. However contrary to “television law enforcement” deputies spend the majority of their time assisting the public in numerous ways.
WFPSO deputies enforce traffic laws throughout the parish, from the Mississippi State Line in the north to the East Feliciana Parish line (Thompson Creek) in the south and from the Mississippi River on the west to Jackson, Louisiana on the east. The objective of the Uniform Patrol Division is to assist the public in a positive, professional, and helpful manner, to provide a safe and secure environment for the citizens of and visitors to West Feliciana Parish.
The Reserve, or Part-Time, Deputies serve as a support unit to assist Uniform Patrol when there is a need for more manpower. The Reserved Division consists of nine deputies who are interested in law enforcement and in serving their community. Reserve deputies receive training from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Reserve Training Academy.This academy will give reserved deputies the knowledge to patrol on their own. Several of the part time deputies are also employed with other law enforcement agencies, and as such lend additional resources to the sheriff’s office. Reserve deputies, in addition to working regular shifts, also control parking and security at high school football and basketball games.
